Faux Rib Winter Headband - Free Ear Warmer Crochet Pattern || 99% Coffee

Using a big hook and super bulky yarn, this project is perfect if you're looking for a super quick headband to keep you warm this winter.

This pattern also features one of my favorite techniques - working through the 3rd loop! This is how we are able to get the nice horizontal faux rib look in the round!

This pattern is written in 2 sizes

Child
- Approximately 4.5" tall
- Approximately 17" wide laid flat
- Fits a 19" head circumference with about 10% negative ease
Adult
- Approximately 4.5" tall
- Approximately 19.5" wide laid flat
- Fits a 22" head circumference with about 10% negative ease

Materials

1 Skein of Lion Brand Wool-Ease
- Child Size: Approximately 30-40 Yds
- Adult Size: Approximately 35-45 Yds
US N - 9mm hook
Scissors
Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends

Pattern Notes

At the beginning of each round, the Ch 2 will not count as a stitch. The first stitch of every row should go through the same stitch as the chain 2.
Because there are two sizes included in this pattern, you will see stitch counts and number of stitches in the following format: Child (Adult).
- For example - "Chain 35 (40)" will mean to chain 35 for a child size, or 40 for an adult size.
Gauge
- 4" = 8.5 stitches, 7.5 rows HDC T3L

Abbreviations

Ch: Chain
St(s): Stitch(es)
Sl St: Slip Stitch
SC T3L: Single Crochet Through 3rd Loop
HDC T3L: Half Double Crochet Through 3rd Loop

Special Techniques

3rd Loop

In various parts of this pattern, you will find "HDC T3L" or "SC T3L". This means that you will be working your stitch into the loop behind the top "V" of your stitch.

It may be best at first to place a removable stitch marker into the top "V" of your stitch. The bar located directly behind it would be that stitches "3rd loop".

This is really the only new special technique you'll need to know for this pattern!

Pattern

Please see the beginning of this pattern for approximate sizes that you will get from this pattern. Feel free to add on or remove stitches as you see fit.

Note: This pattern features the Half Double Crochet Foundation Chain. If you are unsure of how to do this technique - I have a tutorial available!
You can also substitute the Foundation Chain for the following:
Chain 35 (40)
Join chain in the round with a Sl St TBL of the first St of the chain, being careful not to twist the St.
Ch 2, HDC TBL in the same St, HDC TBL around. Sl St in the Ch 2 space of the beginning of the chain.
Continue with Round 2.

Round 1:

Chain 2 and begin with a Foundation Half Double Crochet Chain (tutorial) of 35 (40) stitches

Being sure not to twist the original chain, bring the first stitch of the chain around to your hook. It may help to lay down the project on a table to make sure the chain isn't twisted.

Sl St in Ch space at the beginning of the foundation chain. This finishes out the first round.

I like to use stitch markers to show the top of the stitches. This helps me make sure my foundation chain isn't twisted while I connect it in the round.

Round 2 - 5: Ch 2, HDC T3L in first St, 1 HDC T3L around until all Sts have been worked. Sl St in Ch 2 space of the beginning of the round.

Repeat above round until all 5 rounds have been worked. About 4"

Round 6: Ch 1, SC T3L in first St, 1 SC T3L around until all Sts have been worked. Sl St into first St and fasten off.

Cut working yarn and weave in ends, also closing the gap on the foundation chain.
