Using worsted weight yarn, this project is perfect for last-minute gifts and craft fairs this season. It's written in both Adult and Child sizes (see pattern notes for sizing) and is available both for free and as an ad-free PDF!
This hat is perfect for the transition from fall to winter, with the yarn keeping it dense enough to use on cooler fall days and warmer winter days, it's great to keep around even leading into spring! Try it out with two of your favorite colors, or give it some variation with two or 3 different color variegated yarns, the choice is up to you!
Ad-Free Printer-Friendly Version

Pattern Notes
- The first chain of each round does not count as a stitch. Always work your last slip stitch and first stitch into the top of the first actual stitch of the round.
- The main part of the hat is always worked using your larger hook size. Use the smaller hook on the brim of the hat to help create a tighter fit around the base of the hat!
- This pattern is written with approximately 15% of negative ease on the smallest part of the hat (the brim) while laid flat. This comes out to about 3" or so of negative ease for an approximately 22" circumference head.
- This pattern alternates using normal double crochet stitches and a double crochet "through the 3rd loop of the stitch". The first row of double crochets will always be worked normal, while the following row will always be worked through the 3rd loop of the stitch.
- All stitches are worked through both loops unless stated otherwise.
- The yarn will need to be carried on the wrong side or cut and picked up on changing color rows - this is up to you.
- The gauge for this hat is as follows:
- Main Hat Pattern: 2" = 7.5 St and 4.5 Rows of pattern.
- Hat Brim: 2" = 8 St and 8 Rows of pattern.
- On color change rounds, yarn should be changed over off the slip stitch, before the first chain.

Pattern
Most of this pattern is done the same for both sizes aside from a few changes. You will see the changes in the format of Child (Adult) when it comes to numbers. For example, 2 (3) DC will mean for a child's size hat, 2 DC. For an adult size hat, 3 DC.
In the PDF version, both hat sizes are separated.
