Consisting of elongated yarn overs, the puff stitch is the perfect way to add a bit of whimsy and texture to your project.
The stitch itself looks fantastic either alone or combined with single and double crochets to really frame the textured stitches. I’ve personally used it in my Fancy Puff Coaster pattern, but I’ve also seen it used in hats, scarves, potholders, and much more!
As with most stitches, it’s always important to read through the entirety of a pattern before you begin working. This stitch, similar to the Double Crochet and many others, has a few variations that can change from pattern to pattern.
For example, you may see some patterns call for using a different chain number or call for using a turning chain of 2 instead of 3. Reading the pattern beforehand can help with a ton of confusion and frustration in the long run.
Step 1: Begin with a chain of 2
Step 2: Yarn over
Step 3: Insert hook into same stitch as your chain 2
Step 4: Yarn over
Step 5: Pull loop through the stitch and pull the loop until the loop is about as long as the first chain 2
Step 6: Repeat steps 2-5 4 more times in the same stitch until there are 11 loops on your hook
Step 7: Yarn over and pull through all 11 loops on your hook
Step 8: Chain 1 to secure your puff stitch
Continuing your round
To continue your puff stitch around the hat evenly, you will be skipping the next stitch and working your next puff stitch in the stitch after that.
Why skip 1? One puff stitch is technically two stitches – the first part being the loops themselves and the Chain 1 being the second stitch of that puff. To keep the round even, you will need to skip 1 stitch between each puff.
